Privacy issues still a risk for Facebook

Facebook is still reeling from its recent data privacy scandal that erupted in March of this year and the company’s business model may have to change if regulators have their way.

Facebook, and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg were caught up in a storm over the access to users’ data that was granted to a third-party, leading to a high-profile appearance before US and UK regulators.

Although the fallout has been limited for the company’s profile so far, it is certain to bring changes to how Facebook, and other social media companies, do business.

Although Facebook has always been known as a “free” social media tool, the recent data publicity has brought further attention to the fact that this, and other social tools, make their revenues from selling customers’ private data or space to advertisers with targeted material according to users’ habits.

If there is a risk of this activity being clamped down on by regulators then Facebook may start to look at monetizing their site in ways that are less reliant on ads, with a subscription model something that has been looked at in the past.

Facebook CFO, Sheryl Sandberg, recently spoke to Bloomberg and talked of a paid option to remove users from the advertising-based model.

How much would you pay for Facebook?

In a recent survey of US users, Recode magazine found that 77% of users would prefer to stick with a free version with ads. For those that would consider the option of a paid model, 41.6% would only pay US$1-5 per month.

Facebook made $12billion of revenues in the recent quarter, which was all related to advertising sales. If the company were no longer allowed the same access to user data, or saw a fall-off in users, that would hit their revenue as advertisers see less success in using the service.Whether we’re a billionaire or a not, changing financial goals and priorities affect us all. has many free online budgeting resources to improve your financial knowledge and get your finances on track.

Will paid-for social media be the norm?

If regulation does come in that forces Facebook to conform to higher privacy standards, this would have to be rolled-out across the media space and could see fees attached to using Google, or Instagram for example. These types of measures would bring big changes to the technology industry, which has seen uninterrupted growth from its humble beginnings in bedrooms and university dorms.

An interesting development in story was the resignation of one of the WhatsApp founders from Facebook’s board. Facebook bought the messaging service for US$19billion in the past and the founder was a key voice in keeping the service free. With new management now onboard, it may be that Facebook are preparing for a new business model that clears up the privacy and data protection issues through other means of monetizing their platforms.

Ice Cream Dreams

Most people scream for ice cream, and if you sell ice cream from a cart, you could have a successful business. Ice cream is a food that is often enjoyed whether it’s hot or cold outside because of the numerous flavors that are offered as well as the variety of toppings that you can get. If you want to have one of the successful ice cream carts, then consider offering seasonal flavors that customers might enjoy, such as watermelon or peach in the spring and summer and pumpkin or peppermint in the winter.

Your cart is your method of advertising. This is where you’ll display the types of ice cream that you sell, the flavors, and the prices. Pictures designed using bright colors will stand out against a white cart, making it easy for people to see what you offer. Avoid using a lot of words on your cart because people are usually more interested in the prices and the basic concept of what you offer without reading a lot of words. If you want to attract more customers, then consider adding music to your cart. You could play music that you hear in the winter to make people think about cold desserts or music that children enjoy hearing since you’ll likely sell more icecream to children and families.

Hand-painted letters are fun and playful, often attracting customers who will ask what you’re selling and whether you drew the design yourself. If you’re looking for a professional design, then consider a wrap around your cart with letters that have straighter edges and images that have more of an official presence instead of those that have a cartoon quality. Don’t forget to change the flavors and any prices of your ice cream when needed so that customers always know what you’re selling.

How to Get the Most Cash for Your Junk Car

Almost 270 million cars are registered across America, and the average roadworthy vehicle age is around 12 years. Of course, many people have to attempt to keep their vehicles far longer which means there are a lot of junk cars on the road. Deciding when you get rid of a junk car can be a real challenge. The average reliable and relatively young used car can cost anywhere between $8,000 and $12,000 while a new car averages around $32,000. That’s a major hit to the finances for most Americans and even payments can be a challenge. So it’s especially important to get the most money for your junk car. But what steps do you need to achieve that goal?

Use Up the Gas in the Tank

Older cars tend to be gas guzzlers, but they also have bigger tanks. With gas prices averaging close to $3 per gallon at the lowest, selling your junk car for cash with a decent amount of gas in the tank is like burning money. Chances are, the salvage yard is just going to dump it anyway. So take one last memorable trip. Go see a good friend, treat your mother out to lunch, or just spend some time sightseeing. One last hurrah can help loosen the bond to your clunky old friend while ensuring it’s not taking you for more of a ride than necessary.

Remove All of Your Belongings

Cars often become their owners’ second homes. But regardless of whether you spend a few minutes a week in your vehicle or half of your life in it, chances are there’s something meaningful and even valuable in it. Music and media, technology and mobile devices, textbooks, clothes, important documents, jewelry, and money may be lurking inside or even in plain sight. Clear out all your belongings before attempting to sell your junk car for cash. Once the vehicle switches ownership, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to retrieve your valuables.

Remove and/or Sell Valuable Components

A modern car is composed of approximately 30,000 different parts. Some of those parts can be reclaimed and reused by the salvage yard while most will be crushed and shredded. That’s sometimes a shame for the unknowing original car owner as some of those components are quite valuable and can add significantly to the amount you’d get on top of selling your junk car for cash. Items like a new battery, electric components, GPS or stereo equipment, and even new or lightly used headlamps can be removed and sold prior to making a deal with the junkyard. Even newer tires can be replaced with balding ones.

Obtain Your Title and Make Sure it’s in Your Name

The only thing a reputable junk or scrap yard will require from you to sell your junk car for cashis your title and identification. Legally the title must be in the name of the person trading the vehicle to the business. Cancel your car insurance prior to opting to sell your junk car for cash and make sure the business has your title. Otherwise, any future costs associated with your vehicle can come back to bite you. If you can’t drive your vehicle in, no worries. We’ll pick it up at the time and place of your choice. The driver will then exchange your junk car and title for cash on the spot. Give us a call when you’re ready to make some extra cash.
